Visit Ohio’s first Civil War monument in Bristolville - honoring Union soldiers and Trumbull County history in a peaceful, small-town setting.
Dedicated on October 15, 1863, Ohio’s First Civil War Monument stands in Bristolville, Trumbull County, as the earliest known memorial in the state honoring Union soldiers who perished during the Civil War. Erected while the war was still ongoing, this historic landmark was funded by local citizens to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of 14 men from Bristol Township who served in battles such as Shiloh, Perryville, and Cedar Mountain.
Designed by local artist Frank J. Hammond and crafted by Myers, Uhl & Company of Cleveland, the monument features a draped funerary urn atop a cubic base adorned with sunken reliefs of Civil War motifs, including cannons and crossed muskets. The inscriptions detail the names and service records of the fallen soldiers, serving as a poignant reminder of the community's contribution to the Union cause.
Situated at the intersection of State Routes 45 and 88, across from 6255 OH-45, the monument is easily accessible and remains a significant site for those interested in Civil War history, heritage tourism, and historical landmarks in Northeast Ohio.
